Giovanni Lucchi:

The way Maestro Lucchi approaches bow making is unique. After his brilliant graduation in double bass at the "G. Rossini Conservatory" in Pesaro, under the guidance of Maestro Scala, he joined a jazz group - the lively "Adriatic Riviera". In the juvenile energy of his twenties, Maestro Lucchi moved to Sweden and spent a "Bohemian" life earning his money playing in ballrooms and night clubs.  

A professional place in an orchestra is, especially nowadays, considered to be a lovely mirage, a mystical vision, so that to finally reach it was like having happiness and security in one's hands. But Giovanni was not happy, and even though he had achieved the position he wanted, he was not satisfied.
The opportunity to give vent to his restlessness came in the form of a requirement. As many string musicians, Maestro Lucchi is compelled to change his bow hair regularly and, when he inquired about a bow repairer, everyone laughed saying, "There is only a bike repairer in Ravenna, able to change bow hairs". After this reply, he said to himself, "I would not be any worse than a bike repairer". In this bizarre way, Giovanni Lucchi has become one the greatest bow rehairers and, in fact, bow makers of all times.
Many years have passed since those first attempts at rehairings, years during which Maestro Lucchi had the possibility to create wonderful bows for some of the greatest musicians of our age (M. Rostropovich, P. Zukerman, G. Karr). In 1978, he founded the "Bow Making School" in Cremona that has graduated, in a span of about 30 years, whole generations of highly skilled bow makers and restorers. 

Like all great master of the past, noted for having built instruments that survived through the centuries, Maestro Lucchi has devoted his life entirely to research. This research helped him to understand the importance of using a scientific method that can be reliable while selecting materials suitable for musical use. In 1983, he patented his ultrasonic meter that has completely changed the selection criteria, giving to both worlds of bow and musical instrument makers innovations such as that which Tourte used (Pernambuco) for his bows. 

Maestro Lucchi has been holding lectures worldwide for more than 20 years and the young Giovanni Lucchi, who left to go to Sweden as a musician, has now become a highly skilled restorer and a unique bow maker, still producing wonderful bows that are "hot-iron marked" as "G. LUCCHI CREMONA".
